Fat Grafting to Breasts
Fat grafting to breast during the breast reconstruction process can be beneficial in a variety of ways. Fat grafting helps to thicken and rejuvenate damaged tissues, particularly from the mastectomy and radiation therapy, and can be used as a sole procedure for breast cancer reconstruction. Dr. Lee also performs fat grafting procedures during second stage and third stage breast reconstruction to help contour the breasts and resolve any deformities that possibly occurred from the original mastectomy.
During this procedure, fat is harvested using traditional liposuction from the patient’s area of choice, generally the abdomen. The fat is then processed and gently injected into the breasts and chest using a small cannula. This procedure helps thicken the skin and tissues to create a thick flap for third stage nipple-areolar reconstruction and tattoo.
